Learning Lifesaving Skills: 4th Graders Practice the Heimlich Maneuver
ANGELA VOCKE

Fourth grade students recently had the unique opportunity to learn an essential lifesaving skill, thanks to a visit from nursing students at Miami University. Through an interactive, age-appropriate workshop, students were introduced to the Heimlich maneuver—learning how to recognize choking emergencies and respond with confidence.

The nursing students guided each session with care, using models and role-playing to ensure students understood the steps. The experience wasn’t just educational—it was empowering. It also reinforced the importance of staying calm in emergencies and helping others safely.

Programs like this highlight the power of community partnerships and experiential learning. By connecting with future healthcare professionals, our students gained valuable knowledge in a fun and memorable way.
